Why a Supermarket Cleaning Service is Bad for your Car!

While the industry has largely moved away from those heavy, swirling nylon brushes because of the well-documented damage they cause, however, switching to a soft touch system introduces a new set of compromises, including cheap, harsh chemicals, and a lack of decontamination.

The primary issues with relying on modern, touchless supermarket car washes center on these 7 factors:

1. The Use of Cheap, Aggressive Chemicals

Because a touchless wash eliminates the mechanical scrubbing of brushes or a wash mitt, it has to rely entirely on water pressure and chemistry to remove dirt. To make this profitable at high volumes and low prices, operators often use heavy-duty, industrial-grade chemicals.

  • Harsh Traffic Film Removers (TFR): To keep costs extremely low and turn vehicles over in 2 minutes, supermarket washes rely on bulk-bought, highly aggressive, high-pH caustic detergents.
  • Zero Preservation: These harsh alkaline chemicals are designed to blast through grease by brute force. In doing so, they will rapidly degrade or completely strip away waxes, polymer sealants, and eventually compromise the life of ceramic coatings.
  • Trim and Glass Damage: If these cheap chemicals aren't diluted perfectly, or if they bake on the car for even a minute on a warm day, they cause permanent white staining on rubber seals, clouding on plastic trims, and chemical etching on glass and clear coats.

2. The Complete Lack of Decontamination

A car cannot be truly cleaned without addressing the bonded contaminants that a standard soap simply can't touch.

  • Iron and Fallout Left Behind: Supermarket washes do not use dedicated fallout removers. Corrosive iron particles from brake dust remain deeply embedded in the customer's clear coat.
  • No Road Tar Removal: They do not use solvent-based tar removers to melt away sticky black road spots.
  • The Static Traffic Film Trap: Because daily drivers lack a high-energy ceramic barrier (like my Alien Magic Gravity setup), months of road film form a static bond with the paint. A supermarket spray cannot safely release this bond without mechanical agitation, leaving a grey, dirty film behind on the paint.

3. The Hazard of the "Drying" Process

Because a supermarket wash leaves that fine, microscopic layer of traffic film and embedded contaminants on the car, the biggest damage happens at the very end:

  • If the service includes a manual wipe-down by an operator with a chamois or microfibre, they are essentially grinding that leftover grit and fallout directly into the clear coat.
  • This is exactly how massive swirl marks and deep scratches are inflicted on cars that look "clean" to the untrained eye

4. Brute-Force Pressure vs. Safe Water Flow

Professional touchless detailing relies on a high water flow rate to safely flush loosened dirt away from the paint. Supermarket operations often flip this physics equation on its head.

  • To save on expensive commercial water bills while still trying to blast bonded dirt away quickly, high-volume bays frequently use industrial pumps pushed to 2,500 to 3,000+ PSI with restricted water flow. They are substituting smart chemistry with raw, shearing mechanical force.

5. The Danger of Being "Too Close"

To make matters worse, the operators at these fast-paced facilities—or untrained customers in self-serve bays—rarely respect safe working distances:

  • The "Point-Blank" Mistake: Professional guidelines dictate keeping a high-pressure nozzle at least 12 to 18 inches away from the vehicle's surface.
  • The Rush Factor: Under immense pressure to clear long queues of cars, staff often hold the powerful lances just an inch or two away from the paintwork to aggressively blast off stubborn road grime, bird droppings, or dead bugs.

6. Documented Real-World Damage

There is extensive evidence across consumer forums, legal disputes, and automotive communities showing the destructive results of this high-pressure, close-proximity cleaning:

  • Clear Coat Delamination (Peeling): When pushed to 2,500+ PSI at close range, the water jet acts like a kinetic blade. If it hits a microscopic edge of a pre-existing stone chip or the edge of a plastic bumper, it can instantly force its way under the clear coat. Drivers frequently report large sheets of clear coat or base paint being actively blown off their vehicles.
  • Worn and "Knife-Like" Nozzles: Commercial equipment suffers heavy wear and tear. Worn-out spray nozzles can stop creating a smooth, safe fan pattern and instead produce sharp, uneven, concentrated water jets that can easily slice or gouge softer surfaces.
  • Damage to Seals, Tyres, and Electronics: Extreme point-blank pressure can easily slice through aging rubber window seals, force water directly past weatherstripping into sensitive cabin electronics, and even cause micro-tears in tyre sidewalls.

7. The Supermarket Model: High Volume, Low Care

  • Guaranteed Footfall: Supermarkets do not rely on repeat car wash custom to survive. They rely on the fact that thousands of people buy groceries there every week. The car wash is just a high-turnover bolt-on service to capture impulse buys.
  • Minimum Wage, Minimum Effort: The staff are usually entry-level, low-paid employees or franchise workers pressured to hit rapid turnaround targets. They are not trained in paint anatomy or chemical safety. Because their paycheck is the same whether they scratch your car or not, they have zero incentive to take extra care.
  • The "Faceless" Business: If a customer's clear coat peels or a plastic trim is stained by harsh chemicals, the staff can simply point to a corporate disclaimer, or customer service. They have no personal skin in the game.

Why I'm Different - A Professional Detailer

Many car owners assume all "touchless" washes are the same. In reality, a high-volume supermarket car wash and a professional touchless detailing service are worlds apart.

While cheap volume washes rely on brute force and harsh chemicals to turn cars over in minutes, my business is built on preservation, advanced chemistry, and personal accountability.

8. Intelligent Chemistry

  • I exclusively use world-class, scientifically advanced pre-washes like Bilt Hamber Touch-Less and Auto Foam. This uses sugar-based corrosion inhibitors to safely encapsulate and lift dirt without damaging your paint's protective barrier or drying out your trims.
  • Bilt Hamber foams are widely regarded as one of the best, most effective, and safest pre-wash snow foams available. They are fully biodegradable, non-caustic, and safe for all paint finishes, including waxes, sealants, and ceramic coatings, using active surfactants to lift dirt without scrubbing.
  • Known for exceptional cleaning power (described as "touchless"), effectively removing dirt and road grime without manual agitation.

9. True Chemical Decontamination

  • I perform a true decontamination on your vehicle using heavy-hitting specialty products like Bilt Hamber Korrosol. This chemically melts embedded iron fallout right out of the clear coat (you will actively see it bleeding purple as it works!) leaving the paint incredibly smooth without ever physically touching it.
  • Customer that use my services are shocked at the bleeding effect (purple in color), and indication of successfully reacting with and dissolving embedded iron particles (ferrous contamination).
  • This mean that previous washing processes only removed top-layer dirt (like mud and dust) but left the embedded metal particles behind.

10. Precision Water Control

  • I use a premium AVA P70 specialized pressure washer.
  • Instead of using a narrow, knife-like jet of water, I use a wide-angle fan jet at a safe, paint-friendly pressure.
  • This disperses the energy across the panel and uses a high water volume to safely flush the dissolved grime away. I let the high-tier chemistry do the hard work, not aggressive water pressure.

11. The "Day One" Barrier Advantage

  • To keep a car looking flawless without ever touching the paint with a wash mitt, the strategy must start early.
  • By getting your vehicle from day one, I can apply high-energy hydrophobic barriers like Alien Magic Gravity ceramic.
  • This creates an ultra-slick shield that dirt simply cannot stick to, making future touchless maintenance incredibly safe and effective.

12. Personal Accountability

  • This is my business, and my reputation is on the line with every single vehicle.
  • I care deeply about my results because I consider it a personal failure if a customer never returns.
  • You get a dedicated expert who understands paint anatomy and treats your vehicle with the respect it deserves.
