My Detailing Process
People often smile when I've finished cleaning their vehicle.
I'm a paint correction specialist, I focus on the exterior, as a detailer, the majority of my work is correcting years of abuse from supermarket cleaning services, who focus on speed, and clean to "the naked eye," using the perfect storm of harsh products and high pressure.
Commonly referred to as "wash-and-scratch" services in the detailing industry - and justifiably so, I see the irreparable damage they cause every day.
Chemicals
I use a maximum of 7 products, they're award winning, biodegradable, non-caustic and PH neutral - considered the "gold standard" in the detailing industry. If you're wondering if this is a discount service, think again, I don't skimp on product quality, everything is top notch, which is why I can consistently produce amazing finishes.
Only amateurs think cheap is good and super high pressure gets results.
My unbeatable low prices are because I'm building a reputation, and you're only paying for product use, not my time.
- Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel: Auto-Wheel is widely regarded as one of the best and most effective wheel cleaners on the market, frequently winning independent tests for its performance. It is a UK-based product known for being a powerful, non-acidic, pH-neutral cleaner that tackles both standard road grime and embedded iron particles.
- Bilt Hamber Korrosol: The surgical "chemical clay bar" in my tool kit. Korrosol handles the microscopic shards of hot iron (brake dust) that physically hook into your clear coat, which untreated cause rust to develope.
- Bilt Hamber Touchless: A heavy-duty, water-based snow foam that is widely considered the gold standard for touchless cleaning power. Unlike many "aesthetic" foams that stay thick like shaving cream but don't clean well, Touchless is a "functional material" designed to systematically burst its bubbles to wet and penetrate road grime.
- Bilt Hamber Auto Wash Shampoo: This shampoo is highly regarded for its ability to clean like an alkaline cleaner while remaining pH-neutral, making it ideal for maintaining ceramic-coated vehicles. It offers exceptional lubrication, virtually zero foam, and a 1:2000 dilution ratio, providing a safe, effective, and economical, residue-free wash.
- Bilt Hamber Clay: multi-award-winning paint decontamination product designed to remove bonded surface contaminants like industrial fallout, tree sap, and brake dust. They are unique because they only require tap water as a lubricant, eliminating the need for expensive dedicated clay lubes - I use the lubrication for the BH shampoo, miles better than off the shelf alternatives, and infinitely better than tap water.
- Bilt Hamber Surfex HD: Surfex HD is a highly concentrated, water-based all-purpose cleaner (APC) and degreaser widely regarded as one of the most effective in the automotive detailing industry. It is designed to remove grease, oil-based contamination, and organic grime without using harsh solvents.
- Koch Chemie PSS: PSS is a premium, silicone-oil-free dressing designed to protect and maintain exterior plastic and rubber parts. It is highly regarded for its longevity and its ability to restore a "factory-fresh" semi-matte appearance.
- Bilt Hamber Double Speed Wax: Double Speed is an award-winning, high-performance paste wax that blends premium T1 carnauba wax with hydrophobic polymers. It is designed to offer the deep gloss of a traditional wax with the durability and detergent resistance of a modern sealant.
My Machine
I use the AVA P70, which is a powerhouse that bridges the gap between domestic washers and professional static units. As a strictly touchless guy, the P70 is the most important tool I own because its specs are designed to solve the "static bond" problem that usually forces people to use a wash mitt.
- No Pulse: For a touchless clean, you need a steady stream to ensure an even "sweep" of the panel. Pulsing pressure (common in cheaper units) leaves "zebra stripes" of traffic film behind.
- Precision: Cleaning a car touchless takes longer because I have to be methodical. The Zero-Force trigger prevents hand fatigue, allowing me to maintain the perfect 45-degree angle to the paint for 15+ minutes straight.
- Water Conservation: I normally use between 50 and 80 Litres of water per wash. 50 being amaintenance wash, and 80 being the first time I clean a new customers vehicle. Costing roughly 28p and 44p respectively, per wash.
My Process
Taken years to develop this process, through trial and error, resulting in the best showroom finish, every single time.
This process is designed to get your car into a state of being "surgically clean," providing the perfect foundation for the wax polish.
So the process is;
- Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel - Clean and decontamination - leave to dwell for 2 minutes, agitate with wheel mitt and rinse.
- Built Hamber Kerrosol - if your wheels are highly contaminated, I'll test the body work and repeat the above process. Korrosol is diluted version of Auto Wheel.
- Bilt Hamber Touchless Snow foam pre-wash, I normally add two layers, the first to remove the majority of the dirt and grime, and the second to leave a super clean surface, each layer is left to for between 5 & 8 minutes - how long varies from car to car, I can tell just from looking.
- Bilt Hamber Auto Wash Shampoo - removes any remaining traffic film, no agitation required at this point, a near zero pressure wipe over with the detailing mitt, no rinsing or drying required.
- Bilt Hamber Clay - mostly used as as part of a correction process, for example a poorly bonded sealant, or when correcting paint. Rub over the clean surface post shampooing to pick up any tiny pieces of grit, grime, dust etc. Always use when cleaning super expensive cars.
- Bilt Hamber Surfex HD - a superior degreaser used on the exterior trim, agitation with a scrubbing brush and a wipe over to remove residue.
- Koch Chemie PSS - PSS is a premium, silicone-oil-free dressing designed to protect and maintain exterior plastic and rubber parts. It is highly regarded for its longevity and its ability to restore a "factory-fresh" semi-matte appearance - this is an awesome product.
- Bilt Hamber Double Speed Wax - Applied to a wet surface, water from the clean shampoo bucket, 30 second dwell time buff of with one of my awesome £50 drying towels.
Why this Process?
This process is my "secret sauce," with each layer building to create the perfect surface for waxing.
While the manufacturer advise applying the wax to a dry surface, the lubricants in Auto Wash is the ideal partner for Double Speed, creating a more glossy and durable finish.
When applied to dry surface, Double Speed, become "globby" and thicker in spots, making it hard work to buff. Whereas applying wet, means the lubricant dilutes the wax, for a super thin layer, which is much easier to buff, and leaves the showroom finishes I'm famous for.
