Simple Test
A shallow scratch dissapears when sprayed with water - meaning the scratch has only affected the clear coat, and can be corrected with fine grade compounds.
Deep scratches don't dissapear when sprayed with water - and you will normally see a light grey colour, this is the paint primer, meaning the damage is significant. View my deep scratch removal page for more info on this service.
Clear coat scratches are easier to correct, almost all of the work is completed with an orbital polisher, and the same compounds I use to correct full panels.
I use Koch Chemie Fine Cut F6.01 (P2500 grit), and Micro Cut M2.02 (P4000 grit), and finish with Bilt Hamber Double Speed wax.
As with all of my services, I include a maintenance wash, because correction only does half the work - we need to protect your vehicle moving forward.
The Process
Double Speed-Wax is an award-winning carnauba-polymer paste wax known for its exceptional durability and extreme water repellency. It is highly regarded as a Last Stage Product (LSP) because it provides professional-grade protection.
After the scratch has been removed, the fresh clear coat is exposed. This wax creates a hard, detergent-resistant film that shields the newly leveled surface from UV degradation and environmental fallout.
By creating a highly slick and hydrophobic surface, it reduces the friction during future washes. This makes it harder for dirt to stick and less likely for you to accidentally re-scratch the paint.
Unlike standard carnauba waxes that may only last a few weeks, Double Speed-Wax is formulated with polymers that allow it to last up to 6 months or more.
