Clear Coat / Paint Restoration


Service Overview

I return your vehicle clear coat back to showroom condition, this no-nonsense service that includes a full decontamination, clean, preparation (clear coat clense), and a 3-4 stage polish.

Honestly, you will be shocked by the pristine finish, it feels like rubbing your hand across silk, there's no feeling like it.

For the polish I use a dual action polishing machine, that gently removes microscopic layers of clear coat, this removes heavy, fine and micro scratches, marring, swirl marks and holograms.

Most vehicles only require a 3-stage polish, but older vehicles that have never been restored and have heavy scratching will probably need 4-stages, I will evaluate this once I see your vehicle.

Decontamination

Every part of the car is decontaminted prior to cleaning, this is because in addition to the clear coat seal, I also decon the wheels, and polish the side windows.

  • Bilt Hamber Korrosol: The sister product to Auto-Wheel, but it is formulated specifically as a pure iron fallout remover for your car's paintwork and glass.

Clean

  • Bilt Hamber Touch-Less: A triple tap of this incredible powerful sugar based foam, 1st to release dirt and grime, 2nd to mitt wipe over, and 3rd to ensure a completely clean surface.
  • Bilt Hamber Phat Neut: To ensure the clear coat is completely steralized of all contaminates, removing heavy, continuous traffic film, greasy road film, and embedded granular dirt that a touchless pre-wash cannot break down on its own.

Preparation

  • Bilt Hamber Medium Clar Bar: Specifically engineered to handle moderate paint contamination on vehicles that are driven regularly, providing a balanced level of bite without being overly aggressive on your clear coat.
  • Bilt Hamber Cleanser Fluid: A professional-grade, spirit-based panel wipe and pre-wax degreaser designed to deeply clean the microscopic pores of your paintwork. After using Clenser Fluid the surface is effectively sanitized.

Polishing

  • Menzerna Heavy Cut Compound 400: A highly effective one-step polishing compound capable of eliminating sanding marks, random deep scratches (RDS). Worked over a period of time, the abrasive particles diminish to produce a high gloss finish on hard and scratch-resistant paintwork.
  • Menzerna Medium Cut Polish 2500: A medium-tier polishing compound designed to rapidly eliminate moderate paint defects like automatic car wash swirls, light scratches, weathering, and sanding marks up to 2500 grit.
  • Menzerna Super Finish Plus 3800: A legendary, ultra-fine show-car finishing polish explicitly designed to achieve the absolute maximum level of optical clarity and reflection possible.
  • Menzerna Power Lock: A polymer coating sealant suitable for all types of gloss automotive paint finishes. As well as imparting a high shine, Power Lock also protects against environmental fallout and has excellent water-beading properties.
  • Menzerna Endless Shine: Produces improved water beading and reduces the accumulation of dirt, while helping to rejuvenate the finish. Used mostly to boost the gloss of the sealant layer, and as a final QA process when complete.

Severe Scratches

Some scratches cannot be removed by polishing. You can easily check what can't be removed. If you can catch your finger nail on the scratch it's too deep to be removed or if the sratch dissapears when water is sprayed on it, it can be removed.

I can "diminish" deeper scratches, but that requires a more agressive technique using 3M Trizact wet sanding, but then only 2000, 3000 and 5000 grit.

Anything deeper usually requires a respray at our body shop.

Mechanical Correction vs. Chemical Protection: Why Polishing Always Beats a Ceramic Coating Alone

When looking to restore a vehicle’s paintwork, it is a common misconception that applying a ceramic coating will hide scratches and bring back a showroom shine. In reality, a ceramic coating cannot fix bad paint.

Here is the technical breakdown of why a multi-stage machine polish is the most critical step in paint restoration.

1. True Specular Reflection Requires a Level Substrate

Gloss is not a chemical layer; it is physics. When light hits a scratched or weathered clear coat, the light scattering causes diffuse reflection, which makes the paint look dull, hazy, and faded.

  • The Polishing Fix
    A 3-to-4 stage machine polish uses diminishing or super-micro abrasives to physically level the clear coat. By removing microns of damaged clear coat down to the depth of the scratches, we create a perfectly flat, microscopically smooth surface. This allows for specular reflection—light bouncing off the paint in a uniform direction, resulting in that deep, mirror-like gloss.
  • The Coating Flaw
    Ceramic coatings are completely optically clear and incredibly thin (usually measuring just 1 to 2 microns). They possess no filling capabilities. If you apply a coating over scratches, the light will continue to scatter underneath it, permanently locking in the dullness.
  • 2. Coatings Act as a Magnifying Glass

    Because ceramic coatings are engineered for optical clarity, they behave exactly like a magnifying glass.

    • The Polishing Fix
      Mechanical correction physically eradicates defects like severe swirl marks, bird lime etching, random deep scratches (RIDS), and heavy oxidation.
    • The Coating Flaw
      If you skip the intensive machine polishing stages, a ceramic coating will actually highlight and exaggerate every single flaw beneath it. Swirls will become more noticeable, and oxidation will look trapped, ruining the aesthetic finish of the vehicle.
    • 3. Surface Energy and Chemical Bonding

      For any protective product to work, it requires the correct substrate conditions to bond effectively.

      • The Polishing Fix
        Deep machine polishing removes the dead, oxidized upper layer of paint, exposing fresh, chemically stable clear coat. This process, followed by a panel wipe, drastically increases the surface energy of the paintwork.
      • The Coating Flaw
        Attempting to apply a coating to unpolished paint means the ceramic is trying to bond to dead paint cells, embedded industrial fallout, or old wax residues. Without the foundational mechanical prep of a machine polish, the coating cannot form its cross-linked covalent bond with the clear coat, leading to premature product failure.
